Our Gift of Life
In October 1996, the IFPAS Executive Council
headed by the then IFPAS president, Abdul Sani Abdul Kudus,
agreed to take on the formidable task of raising $1.5
million to build and equip a dialysis centre.
The NKF approached IFPAS in September the
same year after M P Selvem, then chairman of the organising
committee, 19th IFPAS National Congress, agreed to the
initiative. Thereafter, things moved rapidly. The Executive
Council explored a number of options to raise funds to
ensure that dialysis treatment is made affordable and
convenient to all kidney patients. The result was the
construction and completion of the IFPAS-NKF Dialysis
Centre.
The IFPAS-NKF Dialysis Centre is a gift of life from
the life insurance industry and a symbol of all that life
insurance stands for. Located at Serangoon Central, the
IFPAS-NKF centre was officially opened by Mr Mah Bow Tan,
Minister for National Development, on 30 January 1999.
Through IFPAS's staunch support, this state-of-the-art
treatment and rehabilitation centre has seen significant
enhancement in its dialysis treatment programme, particularly
through training and patient care.
To date, the IFPAS-NKF Dialysis Centre continues to be
one of the best in the world, providing outstanding treatment
and rehabilitation outcomes to its 93 patients whose lives
have been saved. With the quality treatment received at
the centre, needy patients are given a new lease of life.
